Madonnaphobia

Granduca Madonna, Raphael (1504)

When I was 11 or 12, my family took a trip to Italy. My artist mother and historian brother were largely responsible for our destinations: churches and museums. While any logical person would agree museum and church-going is must-do when exploring Florence and surrounding towns, 11 year old girls will disagree. I wanted to go to the beach. Museums are for the birds, I thought, I want to swim in the Mediterranean.

My pleas fell on deaf ears, and by the 4th or 5th day of church-going I loudly proclaimed in the middle of the Uffizi that I suffered from Madonnaphobia and Jesusitis. These disease were life-threatening and cured only my the cool waters of the Mediterranean sea.

Over a dozen years later, I finally feel validated. I was severely infected, only I had the name wrong.
